چکیده

The application of NH4+-based fertilizers is a common practice in rice production. The immediate effect of a late season urea application on the processes involved in CH4 emission from a rice field was investigated on sandy loam located in the valley of River Po at Vercelli, northern Italy, and planted with rice (Oryza sativa, type japonica, variety Koral). Urea, applied at a rate of 50 kg N ha−1 on the 75th day after flooding, significantly stimulated both CH4 production and CH4 oxidation. During the following 9 days, the rates of CH4 production and CH4 oxidation in the 0–3 cm soil layer increased by 24–52 and 18–41%, respectively, of the fertilized plot compared to the unfertilized control plot. Methane oxidation on roots was also stimulated by urea, indicated by shorter lag times. Porewater concentrations of CH4 in the 0–6 cm soil layer increased with time and soil depth, but were not affected by fertilization with urea. Urea application also exhibited little impact on CH4 emission. During the 7 days following fertilization, urea only slightly reduced the CH4 flux. Ammonium originating from urea hydrolysis was completely depleted from the porewater within 3 days, mainly due to plant uptake. Fertilizer application did also not affect the contribution of CH4 oxidation to the net flux of CH4, determined by measuring dCH4 and by inhibition of CH4 oxidation. The absence of any effect of urea on net CH4 emission in this study was presumably caused by the rapid depletion of urea, the counterbalance between the increase of CH4 production and the increase of CH4 oxidation after fertilization, and methanogenesis in deeper soil layers. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Influence of fertilizer management and water regime on methane emission from rice fields

Experiments were conducted to determine methane emission from a rainfed lowland rice field (water depth about 3–30 cm) and an irrigated shallow rice field (4–6 cm), both planted to the same cultivar, cv. ‘Gayatri,’ as influenced by fertilizer management practices. Methane emission peaked from 100 to 125 days after transplanting followed by a decline in rainfed lowland field plots. Application o...

A two-year field measurement of methane and nitrous oxide fluxes from rice paddies under contrasting climate conditions

The effects of three irrigation levels (traditional normal amount of irrigation [NA100%], 70%, and 30% of the normal amount [NA70% and NA30%]) and two rice varieties (Oryza sativa L. Huayou14 and Hanyou8) on CH4 and N2O emissions were investigated over two years under contrasting climate conditions (a 'warm and dry' season in 2013 and a normal season in 2014). Hanyou8 was developed as a drought...

Methane emission from a simulated rice field ecosystem as influenced by hydroquinone and dicyandiamide.

A simple apparatus for collecting methane emission from a simulated rice field ecosystem was formed. With no wheat straw powder amended all treatments with inhibitor(s) had so much lower methane emission during rice growth than the treatment with urea alone (control), which was contrary to methane emission from the cut rice-soil system. Especially for treatments with dicyandiamide (DCD) and wit...

Fertilizer application timing influences greenhouse gas fluxes over a growing season.

Microbial production and consumption of greenhouse gases (GHG) is influenced by temperature and nutrients, especially during the first few weeks after agricultural fertilization. The effect of fertilization on GHG fluxes should occur during and shortly after application, yet data indicating how application timing affects both GHG fluxes and crop yields during a growing season are lacking. We de...
